Gut Job – Kittery, Maine (2011-2014)

This property is special in so many ways. It’s a perfect white house sitting on a grassy hill of 2.25 acres that overlooks a tidal cove. To this day, it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.

The property pictures will tell you why I fell in love — it really was love at first sight. Why? Well, look at the pictures of the inside. This project was not for the faint-of-heart. We didn’t change anything about the exterior of the house or stunning land, but we gutted the inside. We turned a choppy, but classing eight-room house into a graciously flowing home that fit our comfortable and very casual lifestyle.

When we started the house only had one bathroom with a shower stall. The condition of the house was uninhabitable. The spacious kitchen was the heart of the entire house. The open floor plan created an open kitchen, dining and living room all with stunning (stunning) views of the tidal cove. The living room was also open to the kitchen and family room and we incorporated the staircase to the 2nd floor into that room. We added a powder room to the first floor, and two bathrooms on the second floor. What was originally four small bedrooms on the 2nd floor turned into three more spacious feeling bedrooms (thanks to a dormer we added) and a showcase master bathroom with a double shower.

My partner John and I were only the second set owners since 1875. We got to know the family that once lived there and learned how much history and love happened under that roof. We only owned the house for three years. They were the most poignant years of my life; it was in that house I reluctantly had to say goodbye to my lover John, and my father — both passed on within 1 year of each other. I just couldn’t tell you about this house without sharing my deeply emotional connection to it. I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures of the transformation.
